Addressed the 69th session of the UN General Assembly
Addressed the 69th session of the UN General Assembly. Highlighted the need for reform and rejuvenation of the UN. Next year the UN turns 70 and we need to take this as an opportunity to bring about the various positive changes. Why is it that despite having such a wonderful platform like the UN we have the various G platforms? We need to move towards 'G-All' and see how the UN can be made even more effective.
On the issue of terrorism, I made it clear that no country in the world is safe from it. We need to adopt the Comprehensive Convention on Global Terrorism as the matter has been pending for long.
I spoke about India's firm belief in the philosophy 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' and talked about the strength of Yoga. I gave the idea of celebrating a day as International Yoga

The Prime Minister said that Indian scientists, through their hard work and dedication, have stretched the boundaries of human enterprise and imagination. He described the Mars Orbiter Mission as an indigenous pan-Indian effort, stretching from Bangalore to Bhubaneswar, and Faridabad to Rajkot.
Praising the scientists, Shri Narendra Modi said, the hunger of exploration and the thrill of discovery are not for the faint hearted. He remarked that he had chosen to be present at ISRO today, unmindful of success or failure of the mission. PM launches Swavlamban Abhiyaan - new pro-poor initiatives of the Gujarat Government
"Three things are important for the shram-yogi: self reliance (swavalamban), self independence (swashray) and self-dignity (swabhimaan)."

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi today (17.09.2014) launched "Swavalamban Abhiyan" - a set of 11 new pro-poor initiatives of the Gujarat Government, at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar. Addressing a large gathering on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that 17th September is observed as Vishwakarma Day across the country, and Vishwakarma is revered by all shram-yogis (people who live through hard work). Congratulating the state government, he said it is significant that the state government has chosen this day to launch "Swavalamban" initiatives.
The Prime Minister said three things are important for the shram-yogi: self reliance (swavalamban), self independence (swashray) and self-dignity (swabhimaan). He said no "shram yogi" likes to be dependent. Gujarat Government has launched these pro-poor initiatives for the benefit of shram yogis, especially women and youth, so that they are empowered to fight poverty, he added. This is in keeping with the spirit of "Shrameva Jayate," he said.
The Prime Minister said that women in Gujarat are at the forefront of animal husbandry and milk production, and they will be benefited and empowered through this scheme. He also said ITIs in the state are focusing on soft skill development, so that the students can communicate their skills and abilities.
The Prime Minister said the neo-middle class will also receive protection through the Swavalamban initiative of Ma-Vatsalya Yojana.
The Governor of Gujarat, Shri O.P. Kohli, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Smt. Anandiben Patel and several state ministers were present on the occasion.

Visited Taimei Elementary School in Tokyo.
I sat in the 136-year old school as a student, wanting to learn more about the Japanese education system including how their salient features can be blended in our education system.
It is now accepted that the 21st century will be Asia's century and we have to prepare ourselves for that. Asian countries must learn each other's languages and values. In India schools are offering Japanese as a language option but there is a shortage of teachers. Japan can take up an initiative of teaching Japanese language online. Similarly, Indian languages can be introduced in Japan as well. This will help both our nations.

Addressed Indian and Japanese businesspersons at a luncheon in Tokyo.
Called upon Japanese businesspersons to invest in India. India seeks help from Japan in areas such as skill development and research. Announced that a special management team would be set up directly under the PMO to facilitate investment proposals from Japan.
The clear mandates received by the Governments of India and Japan will deliver a strong push to bilateral relations between our two nations.
21st century will be Asia's century and we have to provide the answer on how the century will be. India and Japan will have a big role in meeting people's aspirations in this century.

At University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo.
I talked about the importance we attach to girl child education.
In an answer to one of the questions, I said that India and Japan should focus on shared values of democracy, development, and peace. This would be like lighting a lamp in the dark.
Answering a question on the environment, I spoke about India's centuries old tradition of respecting and living in harmony with Nature.
Changes in human habits led to conflict with nature and that has caused problems, which need to be mitigated.
